Pools Rock Wines

In 1988, the late David Clarke OAM founded Pooles Rock. The initial establishment began with the 23-hectare Pooles Rock vineyard located in Broke. Subsequently, in 2002, the 74-hectare Glen Elgin Estate in Pokolbin was acquired.

Following David Clarke’s passing, the Agnew family, who have been active in the wine industry since 2004 and also own the nearby Audrey Wilkinson vineyard, acquired the brands, vineyards, and winery in Pokolbin.

While maintaining their distinct identities, all brands under the Agnew Wines umbrella have undergone certain areas of consolidation such as management, sales, marketing, and viticulture. Additionally, significant investments have been made to upgrade their winery.

In 2019, Xanthe Hatcher was appointed as the Chief Winemaker for Agnew Wines, responsible for overseeing the Audrey Wilkinson, Cockfighter’s Ghost, and Pooles Rock labels.

The name DEGEN (pronounced D-EE-GEN), derived from our German heritage, signifies a fencing sabre or sword, which is represented in our branding through an antique block print featuring a man in a poised fencing stance. This lunge position symbolizes balance, reflecting our philosophy of maintaining equilibrium in vineyard management to cultivate premium quality grapes, resulting in exquisite wines.

Despite being the smallest commercial vineyard in the Lower Hunter region, the DEGENs specialize in growing Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Semillon varieties, collaborating with esteemed winemakers from the Hunter Valley to produce exceptional single vineyard wines.

Our favourite is the 2019 Degan Shiraz which is a full-bodied Hunter Valley Shiraz that balances juicy blackberries and raspberries with supple tannins. A good rest in new French Oak barriques offers the right amount of oak to finish.
